to a search engine should not be thought of as a part of a search engine optimization process. Having a sitemap on your site in no way guarantees a better ranking for your site. Its existence only nudges search engines in the right direction. Even before a page can be ranked higher, it needs to be indexed by the search engine. Sitemaps help search engines locate the pages you want the latter to see on your site.

What is a Sitemap?
A sitemap describes the organization tree of your site’s content. It displays the nesting of your content in relation to each other. In some sense, you can think of a sitemap as the way in which a regular user might navigate through your content to find what they are looking for.
